Featuring the Historic Liberty Design of George T. MorganThe coin's obverse bears a left-side portrait of Liberty. Like the reverse, it was designed by George T. Morgan. This effigy broke with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure in favor of showing her as an American-style figure. She faces left wearing a Phrygian cap, a crown, and a ribbon. The cap indicates that she is a freed slave, while the crown symbolizes national unity, consisting of a Southern crop, cotton, and a Northern crop, wheat. On the ribbon is an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY." Rim inscriptions include a statutory motto, "E PLURIBUS UNUM," and the date, "1892." Connecting the two inscriptions are thirteen stars, symbols of the country's original states. A heraldic eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The olive branch is a traditional symbol of peace, while the arrows symbolize America's willingness to stand up for her values. An open wreath wraps under the bird, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. Inscriptions along the rim provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
