Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse as a young woman wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with the word "LIBERTY" on the headband. Worn by freedom fighters throughout world history, the Phrygian cap is a known symbol for the pursuit of liberty. The image is surrounded by thirteen six-pointed stars, the date of issue "1898" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
The reverse features the national bird of the U.S., an eagle, grasping an olive branch to symbolize peace and a cluster of arrows to represent strength. Inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR," "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the "O" Mint mark of the New Orleans Mint.
