Why order this Morgan 1898-O Silver Dollar?

Own a piece of the 20th anniversary issue of the most iconic coin in American history with this 1898-O Morgan Silver Dollar. First issued a little more than a decade after the bloody Civil War that ripped America in two, the Morgan series helped to give a new identity to a unified nation. This coin is a particularly poignant part of that, as it was struck at the New Orleans Mint in a state that was part of the Confederacy. It bears an "O" mint mark and was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. It comes from a mintage of 4.44 million pieces.

Striking Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

George T. Morgan, who designed both the obverse and the reverse, lends his name to the series. Morgan's obverse design broke with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure. Instead, Morgan modeled her off of Anna Willess Williams, an American-style figure. She dons a Phrygian cap that identifies her as a freed slave. It covers some of her long, curly hair. Also on her head are a ribbon that bears her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown of cotton and wheat. The crown represents unity, as it consists of one Southern crop and one Northern one. The portrait is encircled by two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1898," and thirteen stars, which represent the original states.

A heraldic eagle holds arrows and an olive branch while spreading its wings on the reverse. The arrows symbolize the issuing country's willingness to defend her values, while the olive branch expresses a preference for peace. An open wreath, which stretches from just under one wing to just under the other, partially encircles the bird. Above the eagle's head is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," arches over the image, while the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR," is inscribed on the bottom portion of the rim.

Beautifully Maintained MS65

This coin received a Mint State 65 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade means that the coin was well struck and shows no traces of wear.
