Why Make This VG8 1897-S Barber Dime the Next Addition to Your Collection?

The Barber dime was first struck by the U.S. Mint in 1892. Barber coinage as a whole received a mixed reception from the public and opinions continue to be split among collectors today. This Barber dime was struck in 1897 at the San Francisco Mint. There were 1,342,844 of these minted. This figure is moderate compared to other coins of the series.

Classic Barber Design

The designs on this dime are the work of Charles E. Barber. His portrait of Liberty is displayed on the obverse. The date can be seen below Liberty's neck as she faces the right.

Barber's design for the reverse is rather simple. The face value is inscribed at the center. This inscription is surrounded by a detailed wreath. The "S" mintmark is located below the bottom of the wreath.

NGC Certified VG8

This classic coin was submitted to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) for grading and encapsulation. The team of unbiased professionals there assigned it the grade of Very Good 8. Wear is plainly visible on this specimen.
