Production began in 1878, this coin was struck in 1897. It bears an "S" Mint mark because it was struck at the San Francisco Mint. Its mintage was a little on the low side, only 5,825,000 of these were produced. Classic patriotic designs by George T. MorganThe obverse features George T. Morgan's depiction of Liberty. She has long hair with some curls in this design. The date, "1897," is below Liberty among the 13 stars at the edge. The reverse displays a bald eagle. The tips of its wings are above its head and a wreath partially surrounds the eagle. The "S" Mint mark is between the face value and the wreath. Mint State 64 Condition certified by NGCTo have this 1897-S Morgan dollar graded and encapsulated, it was submitted to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). After the experts there examined it thoroughly it was assigned the grade of Mint State 64. This grade is near the middle of the uncirculated range.
