Why buy this 1897 Silver Morgan Dollar?

This 1897 Morgan combines a fascinating time in America's monetary history with one of the most iconic series in American numismatic history. In the year of issue, the US was just beginning to emerge from the Panic of 1893. The series itself was an important symbol of identity and unity for a country that had recently been torn apart by a bloody civil war. This coin was part of a mintage of 2,822,000. It was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint.

Featuring the Classic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan

Both faces of this coin were designed by George T. Morgan. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty, whom Morgan modeled off of Anna Willess Williams. Morgan's selection of Williams meant that Liberty would be portrayed as an American-style figure rather than a Greek-style figure, as was tradition. On her head are a Phrygian cap, a crown of cotton and wheat, and a ribbon that bears her name, "LIBERTY." The crown represents national unity, as it consists of a Southern crop and a Northern one, while the cap identifies her as a freed slave. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the date, "1897," are inscribed along the rim. They are joined by thirteen stars, symbols of the original states.

On the reverse, a heraldic eagle spreads its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch. The former represent the issuing country's willingness to defend its values, while the latter expresses a desire for peace. The eagle is partially encircled by an open wreath, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between its wings. This image is encircled by a pair of rim inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
