Powerful Liberty Design by Charles E. Barber
Obverse: Like the reverse, the obverse was designed by Charles E. Barber. Liberty faces left wearing a coronet that bears an inscription of her name. Thirteen stars spread throughout much of the rim, representing the original states, while the date, "1896," is included at the bottom.
Reverse: The Roman numeral "V" is encircled by an open wreath on the reverse. The "V" combines with "CENTS," which is at the bottom of this face, to offer the face value. Other inscriptions on the reverse read, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
