Why buy this Barber 1896-O Silver Dime?
In 1896, the United States were starting to recover from the depression that ravaged them earlier in the decade. As the recovery was slow, though, production of dimes picked up only slightly. This coin was one of 610,000 of its kind. It bears the "O" mint mark of the New Orleans Mint, where it was struck on a 2.5 g planchet of .900 fine silver.
Striking Liberty Design by Charles Barber
Both faces of this coin bear the designs of Charles Barber, though Barber leaned heavily on the work done by designers of other coins to create them. He adapted the design for the obverse from the Liberty image that features on the Morgan Silver Dollar. The adjustments include the addition of a Liberty cap, which represents her freedom, and the shortening of the figure's hair. The effigy is joined by a pair of rim inscriptions that encircle it. They read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "1896."
On the reverse, a wreath that is similar to the one found on the Seated Liberty Dime spreads throughout the rim. Inside the wreath is an inscription of the coin's face value, "ONE DIME."
