Why purchase this Silver 1896 Morgan Dollar?
No coin in American history has had close to the allure of the Morgan Silver Dollar. The series was last struck in 1921 and before that wasn't struck since 1904, yet the coin continues to be an integral piece of Americana. Even non-collectors find it difficult to part with these admired coins. This piece comes from the 1896 edition. Part of a mintage of just under 10 million pieces, the coin was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver. It will arrive in Extremely Fine condition.
Featuring George T. Morgan's Novel Liberty Design
Well into the 1870s, it was tradition to depict Liberty as a Greek-style figure on American coins. In 1878, the US Mint broke with that tradition with George T. Morgan's silver dollar. The obverse instead showed the allegorical figure in an American style. She faces left wearing three items on her head. One is a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY." Another is a Phrygian cap, which indicates that she is a freed slave. The third is a crown, a symbol of unity. It consists of one Southern crop, cotton, and one Northern crop, wheat. This was an important symbol of unity for a nation that had been divided by Civil War shortly before the first issue in the series. Obverse inscriptions read, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1896." They are joined by thirteen stars, which represent the original states.
A heraldic eagle features on the reverse. It clutches arrows and an olive branch, symbols of America's willingness to stand up for her values and peace, respectively. The bird has its head turned to the left and is partially encircled by an open wreath. Between its outstretched wings is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Inscriptions along the rim note the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
