Why buy this Morgan 1896 Silver Dollar?
The 1896 Morgan is a terrific option both for collectors looking for a high grade piece from the series and those who have an interest in American monetary history. That is because it was struck while the country was still feeling the effects of the Panic of 1893. Part of a mintage of 9,976,000 pieces, this coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a .7734 oz planchet of .900 fine silver.
Featuring the Classic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
This series takes its name from George T. Morgan, who designed both its obverse and its reverse. Morgan's obverse design shows Liberty as an American style figure, breaking with the tradition of depicting her as a Greek style figure. She wears a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, a crown of cotton and wheat, and a Phrygian cap. The crown represents unity, as it consists of a Southern crop and a Northern one, while the cap identifies its wearer as a freed slave. The motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" arches over the figure, and the date, "1896," is inscribed below her. The two inscriptions are linked by thirteen stars, which represent the original states.
An eagle holds arrows and an olive branch within an open wreath on the reverse. The arrows serve as reminders to all that America is prepared to stand up for her values, while the olive branch expresses a desire for peace. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above the bird's head. The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
