Groundbreaking American-style Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Obverse: Both faces of this coin bear designs by George T. Morgan. The obverse bears a left-side portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, and crown of cotton and wheat. Encircling the image are two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1896," and thirteen stars.
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch within an open wreath. "IN GOD WE TRUST," the national motto of the issuing nation, is inscribed above the bird's head. Rim inscriptions offer the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
