Why purchase this Morgan 1896 Silver Dollar?
First issued in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar helped to pull the United States together after its horrific Civil War. George T. Morgan's Liberty design depicts Liberty as an American-style figure instead of a Greek one, thus helping to forge a new, common identity. Southern and Northern crops also complement each other beautifully in the design. This 1896 piece would make a great addition to any Morgan collection or make for a beautiful type coin.
Featuring George T. Morgan's Classic Liberty Design
Obverse: Like the reverse, the obverse was designed by George T. Morgan. Liberty is shown in left-side profile wearing a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, a Phrygian cap, and a crown of cotton and wheat. Her effigy is encircled by two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1896," and thirteen stars, which represent the country's original states.
Reverse: On the reverse, a heraldic eagle holds arrows and an olive branch inside an open wreath. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between its wings. Along the rim are inscriptions that provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
This coin was graded Mint State 63 by the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade means that it lacks any traces of wear and has about an average strike.
