Why order this 1896 $2.5 Gold Liberty Head Quarter Eagle?

This 1896 Gold Quarter Eagle is perfect for discerning collectors of historic American coins. Although the mintage is substantially higher than the previous two issues, it was still a small fraction of many of the other issues around that time. This coin is perfect for students of monetary history, as the relatively low mintage was the result of many creditors liquidating securities and transferring gold abroad.

  • This coin is $2.50 legal tender in the United States.
  • This coin was struck on a 4.18 gram planchet of .900 fine gold.
  • This piece is a product of the Philadelphia Mint.
  • This coin was part of a mintage of just 19,070 pieces.

Classic Liberty Design by Christian Gobrecht

Obverse: Both faces of this coin bear designs by Christian Gobrecht. On the obverse, Liberty faces left wearing a coronet that bears an inscription of her name. She is encircled by thirteen stars and an inscription of the date, "1896."

Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle spreads its wings while guarding a union shield. It clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Along the rim are inscriptions of the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the coin's face value, "2 1/2 D." Christian Gobrecht was the third Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. He is credited with designing several historic coins.

Beautifully Preserved MS64 with Green Label

This coin earned a Mint State 64 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC). That grade is given to coins that have average or above strikes and some marks or hairlines. The grade is provided on NGC's prestigious Green Label, which is the result of a collaboration between Rare Coin Company of America (RARCOA) and NGC. To qualify for the Green Label, prior to being submitted to NGC for grading and encapsulation, a coin must first meet criteria set by RARCOA's team.
