Why buy this Lost Hoard 1895 South Africa 1/2 Pond + 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrand 2-Coin Set?
The Lost Hoard has a fascinating yet mysterious history. The hoard consisted of 910 Kruger Ponds from late 19th century South Africa. The hoard was thought to sent to the Netherlands during that troubled period in South Africa and was transferred to Switzerland before World War II. The hoard remained in a vault there until it was recently auctioned off. This set consists of one of the Ponds from that set and a modern Proof Krugerrand.
- This set consists of an 1895 1/2 Pond and a 2019 1/10 oz Gold Krugerrand.
- The Pond was struck from 3.99 g of .917 fine gold, while the Krugerrand was struck from 3.393 g of .917 fine gold.
- The Pond was part of a mintage of 135,000 pieces, and the Krugerrand was part of a mintage of just 233 pieces.
- The Pond was part of the Lost Hoard and the Proof Krugerrand features a Lost Hoard privy mark on its reverse.
- Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded the Pond Almost Uncirculated 58, the Krugerrand has not been graded.
Stunning Eagle & Crest Design
Pond: The Pond's obverse bears a left-side portrait of Paul Kruger, the third President of the South African Republic. Along the rim is an inscriptions of the name of the issuing country in Afrikaans, "ZUID AFRIKANNSCHE REPUBLIK." An eagle is perched upon the crest of the nation. The bird has its wings spread and is joined by inscriptions of the coin's face value, "1/2 POND," and date, "1895."
Krugerrand: The Krugerrand features the same obverse design as the Pond. Joining the portrait in this case, though, are inscriptions of the name of the issuing country in Afrikaans, "SUID-AFRIKA," and English, "SOUTH AFRICA." A springbok antelope, South Africa's national symbol, splits the date, "2019," on the reverse. Arching over the image is the name of the coin, "1/10 KRUGERRAND," while below it is an inscription of the weight in Afrikaans and English, "FYNGOUD 1/10 OZ FINE GOLD." The reverse also includes the Lost Hoard privy mark.
Beautifully Preserved AU58 with Tumi Signed Label
The 1/2 Pond received a grade of Almost Uncirculated 58 from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade means that the coin retains full details but has slight wear on the highest points. The label on which that grade is provided was hand signed by Tumi Tsehlo, the former director of the South African Mint. Both the uncertified Proof Krugerrand and certified Pond will arrive in a wooden display case designed to house both pieces along with a certificate of authenticity, a story book describing the history of the Lost Hoard, and a reproduction of the mint bag the hoard was found in.
