Why buy this Silver 1895-S Barber Dime?

The mid-1890s were a tumultuous economic time in American history, but 1895 saw some growth toward recovery. That year, the San Francisco Mint produced more dimes than the Philadelphia and New Orleans Mints. This piece bears the San Francisco Mint's "S" mint mark at the bottom of the reverse. It was part of a mintage of 1,120,000 pieces, each one struck from 2.5 g of .900 fine silver.

Iconic Liberty Design by Charles Barber

Charles Barber is credited with both the obverse and reverse designs on this coin, though those designs lean heavily on the creations of others. His Liberty design on the obverse is similar to the one on the Morgan Dollar. Barber shortened the figure's hair and covered much of what remained with a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom from slavery. The date, "1895," is inscribed under the effigy, while "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" spreads throughout the rest of the rim.

A wreath featured on the reverse of the Seated Liberty Dime, and the one that Barber used for this series is almost identical to it. The wreath encircles an inscription of the coin's face value, "ONE DIME."

Fairly Well Preserved VF20

American Numismatic Association Certification Service (ANACS) awarded this piece a Very Fine 20 grade. That means that it retains moderate design detail and retains sharp numbers and letters.
