Why add this 1894-O Barber Silver Dime to your collection?

In 1894, the United States continued to suffer from the Financial Panic of 1893. The country was in a depression, which reduced the need for new coinage. That is why the New Orleans Mint struck fewer than half of the number of dimes that it struck in 1893 in 1894. Part of a mintage of just 720,000, this coin is considered scarce even in low grades. It was struck on a 2.5 g planchet of .900 fine silver and bears the New Orleans Mint's "O" mint mark at the bottom of the reverse.

Inspired Liberty Design by Charles Barber

The Liberty design of the Morgan Silver Dollar served as Charles Barber's model for this series's obverse design. Barber did, however, make some changes to the design. He shortened Liberty's hair and covered the bulk of the rest with a Liberty cap. The coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and date, "1894," are inscribed along the rim.

Barber also designed the reverse, on which the coin's face value, "ONE DIME," is inscribed at the center. That inscription is encircled by a wreath that is almost identical to the one that appeared on the Barber Dime's predecessor, the Seated Liberty Dime.

Relatively Well Preserved F12

The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certified that this coin is in Fine 12 condition. That means that both its letters and digits remain sharp. Although the grade is on the low end of the Sheldon Scale, the scarcity of this coin makes this piece rather attractive.
