Why buy this 1893 Columbian Silver Commemorative Half Dollar?

In 1892, the Windy City was preparing to host the World's Columbian Exposition, which was also known as the Chicago World's Fair. As the event approached, costs started rising, so the manager of the expo suggested selling a commemorative half dollar for $1. Legislation for the coin passed in August of 1892, and the coins were struck both that year and the following year. It was the first ever commemorative coin issued by the US Mint. This piece was struck from 12.5 g of .900 fine silver and was part of a mintage of 1,548,300 pieces.

Powerful Christopher Columbus Design by Charles E. Barber

Charles E. Barber designed the obverse, which features a right-side portrait of Christopher Columbus. Columbus has long hair, and his shoulders are open to the holder. His effigy is encircled by a pair of rim inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "COLUMBIAN HALF DOLLAR."

Columbus's most famous ship, the Santa Maria, sails to the left above a pair of half planispheres on the reverse. The planispheres split the date of his first transatlantic voyage, "1492." The coin's date is inscribed at the bottom, while "WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION CHICAGO" spreads clockwise throughout the rest of the rim.
