This 1891 Morgan Silver Dollar VAM-2 example was evaluated and graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) at the solidly collectible Mint State 61 (MS61) level. The coin was struck at the Philadelphia branch of the U.S. Mint. This coin has the Morgan Top 100 VAM-2 Double Ear attribution and is part of the renowned California Collection. The series is struck on .900 silver planchets that contain .7734 oz. of silver.
Spectacular "Double Ear" Die Variety
The coin features the classic George T. Morgan portrait of Liberty on the obverse and his heraldic eagle on the reverse. This VAM discovery was from Bill Fivaz in 1972. This die variety is identified as VAM-2 in the Leroy Van Allen and George Mallis landmark book on Morgan dollars. Liberty has some pronounced doubling on the ear lobe and about half way up the ear. Strong doubling appears on the hair above the ear.
Mint State 61
MS61 coins are fully uncirculated examples. They will have some mint luster, but the luster may tend to be diminished or slightly below average. Examples tend to have contact marks or hairlines with some of these distractions potentially heavy. Eye appeal can vary widely in the grade from average to very nice.
