Why purchase this 1890-S Silver Morgan Dollar from the Great Montana Collection?
This 1890-S Silver Morgan Dollar was a part of one of the great discoveries of the past fifty years, the Great Montana Collection. The collection was assembled by George Bouvier of Deer Lodge, Montana, who informed a friend about it on his deathbed. The collection consisted of over 17,000 pieces. This one was struck at the San Francisco Mint from .7734 Troy oz. of .900 fine silver. It bears an "S" Mint mark on the reverse.
Iconic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
On the obverse is George T. Morgan's groundbreaking Liberty design. The design is notable because it marked a change from the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure in favor of showing her as an American-style figure. She has a ribbon, a crown of cotton and wheat, and a Phrygian cap on her head.
Morgan also designed the reverse, where an eagle holds arrows, symbols of military preparedness, and an olive branch, which indicates a preference for peace. Its wings are stretched upward and outward. A laurel wreath wraps under the bird, while the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head.
Well Preserved MS63
This coin earned a Mint State 63 grade from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. That grade means that it has a slightly weak to average strike and moderate hairlines and abrasions.
