Why purchase this Morgan 1890-S Silver Dollar?
This 1890-S Silver Morgan Dollar offers collectors the chance to own a mint state piece from one of America's most important historical coins. Struck from .7734 troy oz of .900 fine silver, this coin bears an "S" Mint mark on the reverse. That Mint mark indicates that it was struck as the San Francisco Mint.
Historic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan, the designer from whom this coin gets its name, broke new numismatic ground with his Liberty design for the obverse. Unlike previous versions of Liberty, which were modeled off of Greek-style figures, Morgan's Liberty was an American-style figure modeled off of Anna Willess Williams. The left-side effigy shows her wearing a Phrygian cap, long a symbol of freedom, a crown made from cotton and wheat, two staple American crops, and a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) is inscribed along the rim, where it is joined by thirteen stars and the date.
On the reverse, an eagle clutches arrows, symbols of military preparedness, in one talon and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in the other. The bird has its wings spread. Between them is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," while a laurel wreath wraps under the bird from just below the wings.
