In 1890, the commencement of a new decade marked the thirteenth year of issue of one of the U.S. Mint's most famed series of silver dollar coinage, the Morgan Dollar. Introduced in 1878, design of the Morgan Dollar is credited to George T. Morgan, an English immigrant who was hired by the Mint as an assistant engraver in 1876.

Exceptionally Detailed Silver Dollar Design
Obverse: The obverse features a left facing portrait of Lady Liberty with sprigs of wheat, cotton and oak leaves tucked behind the headband of her Phrygian cap. The cap's headband is inscribed with the word "LIBERTY." Ms. Liberty is surrounded by thirteen stars, the date of issue "1890" and the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM," the Latin phrase meaning "Out of many, one."
Reverse: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" encircle the reverse image of a heraldic eagle grasping three arrows and an olive branch, with a ribbon-tied laurel wreath curving below. "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed between the tips of the eagle's outstretched wings.
