Why buy this Morgan 1890 Silver Dollar?
Discerning collectors are sure to love this 1890 Silver Morgan Dollar. The coin is part of a beloved series that helped a recently divided nation to heal and form an identity of its own. This coin comes from the 13th issue in the series. It was struck from .7734 oz of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint. Just over 16.8 million of these coins were struck.
Classic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
The coin takes its name from George T. Morgan, who designed both of its faces. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty. Morgan chose Anna Willess Williams, an American style figure, as his model, breaking with the longstanding tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek style figure. She has long, curly hair that covers the back of her neck. Some of her hair is covered by a Phygian cap, which indicates that she is a freed slave. Also on her head are a ribbon that bears an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown made from cotton and wheat. The crown is a symbol of unity, as cotton is a Southern crop and wheat is a Northern one. Along the rim, two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the date, "1890," are connected by thirteen stars. The stars represent the original states.
The reverse features a heraldic eagle holding arrows and an olive branch. The former serve as reminders to all that America is prepared to defend her values. The olive branch expresses a desire for peace. An open wreath partially encircles the bird. Above the eagle's head is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Rim inscriptions provide the name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR."
