Featuring the Historic Liberty Design of George T. Morgan
The coin's obverse bears a left-side portrait of Liberty by George T. Morgan. Morgan modeled the image after Anna Willess Williams, an American-style figure, thus breaking with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure. She dons a Phrygian cap, an indicator of a freed slave, which covers much of her long, curly hair. Also on her head are a ribbon that bear an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," and a crown made from cotton and wheat. This is a powerful symbol of unity, as it consists of a Southern crop and a Northern one. The image is encircled by two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1889," and thirteen stars, which represent the original states.
A heraldic eagle spreads its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The arrows remind all of America's willingness to defend her values, while the arrows express a desire for peace. An open wreath spreads out below from just under each of the eagle's wings. Above the eagle's head is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The name of the issuing country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and the face value of the coin, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
