Why order this Toned 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar?

No serious Morgan collector can go without at least one 1889 Silver Dollar. With a mintage of over 21.5 million, the coin has the highest mintage in the series. Even so, this MS64 piece is among the best options for collectors who want to avoid exceptionally high premiums. The coin was struck from .7734 troy oz. of constitutional silver, or .900 fine silver, at the Philadelphia Mint.

Patriotic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

The coin's obverse features a novel Liberty design by George T. Morgan. The novelty stems from Morgan's selection of an American-style model rather than a Greek-style one, as was customary at the time. The figure wears a Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom, and a crown. The crown is made from cotton and wheat, a Southern crop and a Northern crop. Her effigy is encircled by rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1889," and thirteen stars, one for each of the original states.

Morgan's reverse design features the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," between the wings of an eagle. That eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, the former representing America's readiness to defend her values and the latter indicating a preference for peace. Under the bird is a wreath, which extends from under one wing to under the other. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the coin's face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.

Stunningly Preserved MS64

The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certified that this coin is in Mint State 64 condition. That is relatively high for a coin of this type, which is difficult to find in MS66 or better condition. MS64 coins lack any signs of wear, and have above average strikes and booming mint luster.
