Why purchase this 1889 Morgan Toned Silver Dollar?
No Morgan collection is complete without at least one piece from the 1889 mintage. With 21.7 million pieces struck, this coin has the highest mintage in the entire series. In spite of that, it can be difficult to find examples of it on the high uncirculated issues. That makes this MS63 piece an attractive option. Like all Morgans, this piece was struck from .7734 troy oz. of .900 fine silver. It is a product of the Philadelphia Mint. Order now and you will receive the exact piece shown here.
Iconic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan, the man for whom the coin is named, designed both of its faces. The obverse features a left-side portrait of Liberty, which he designed using Anna Willess Williams as his model. Morgan's selection of Williams was significant because the tradition at the time was to use Greek-style models for Liberty. She dons a Phrygian cap, which indicates that she is free, and a crown of cotton and wheat, one Southern crop and one Northern one. Her portrait is encircled by two inscriptions, "1889" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one), and thirteen stars.
The reverse design consists of a wreath and an eagle. The wreath largely encircles the bird, which holds arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace. The wings stretch upward toward the rim, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between them. Rim inscriptions encircle the image, reading "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
Well Maintained MS63
This coin earned a Mint State 63 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it has no traces of wear and remains in choice uncirculated condition. It has lovely toning.
