Why buy this 1889 Morgan Silver Toned Dollar?

No collection of Morgan Silver Dollars is complete without an 1889 piece. This one has some attractive toning. Its MS63 grade makes it particularly attractive for collectors given that high mint state pieces are hard to come by. The coin, which is the exact one depicted on this page, has some toning. It was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from a constitutional silver, or .900 fine, planchet that weighs .7734 troy oz.

Exquisite Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

Coin designer George T. Morgan gives the series its name. Two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and the date, "1889," combine with thirteen stars along the rim to encircle Liberty. Morgan chose an American style model, Anna Willess Williams, for the allegorical figure, whom he depicts in left-side profile. She wears a crown made from one Northern crop, wheat, and one Southern crop, cotton, as well as a Phrygian cap, which indicates that she is a freed slave.

On the reverse, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" encircle an eagle. The bird holds arrows in one talon, indicating that America will fight for her values, and an olive branch in the other, which represents a preference for peace. Above the bird's head is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." An open wreath partially encircles the bird.

Well Preserved MS63

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) certified that this coin is in choice uncirculated condition by awarding it a Mint State 63 grade. Given the scarcity of high mint state pieces of this issue, this toned piece is an attractive choice.
