Why purchase this 1889 Toned Morgan Silver Dollar for your collection?

The 1889 Morgan was the highest mintage issue of the most iconic coin in the country's history. Accordingly, every collector, serious or casual, should have at least one piece from this issue. With a grade of MS63, this one is in very good shape for this mintage. It was struck from .7734 troy oz at the Philadelphia Mint and has some attractive toning that sets it apart from all other issues in this series. When you order from this page, you will get the exact coin shown above.

Classic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

George T. Morgan's obverse design is one of the most important in the history of American numismatics because of Morgan's decision to depart from the tradition of using Greek style models for Liberty and instead us an American one, Anna Willess Williams. She dons two symbols that were significant given that the coin was first issued in the wake of the Civil War. One is a Phrygian cap, which historically was worn by freed slaves. The other is a crown made from one Northern crop, wheat, and one Southern one, cotton. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) is inscribed at the top, and the date, "1889," is inscribed at the bottom. They are connected on the left and right by a total of thirteen stars.

The reverse design is encircled by a pair of inscriptions that offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR." just inside them is an open wreath that largely encircles an eagle, which spreads its wings. In the bird's talons are arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which indicates that the country prefers peace. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above the bird's head.

Beautifully Preserved MS63

This coin remains in Mint State 63 condition according to the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). To receive that grade, a coin must have full mint luster and show no signs of wear. It's in choice uncirculated condition, with some lovely toning.
