Why purchase this Morgan Silver 1889 Toned Dollar?

Every collection of classic American coins needs at least one 1889 Morgan. That is because it was the highest issue in the series, with over 21.7 million pieces struck. This MS63 piece is an attractive choice in part due to the scarcity of this issue in high uncirculated grades. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a .7734 troy oz planchet of .900 fine silver, it has some attractive toning that makes it unique. The coin that you will receive is the exact one shown on this page.

Stunning Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

The designs on both faces of this coin are the work of George T. Morgan. For his obverse design, Morgan made history by opting for an American style model for Liberty, Anna Willess Williams, rather than a Greek style one, as was traditional. He renders her in left-side portrait. Her Phrygian cap, a symbol of a freed slave, covers some of her long, curly hair, which falls down over her neck. Also on her head is a crown of cotton and wheat, a symbol of national unity with one Southern and one Northern crop. Her effigy is encircled by a pair of rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1889," along with thirteen stars.

An eagle is oriented toward the holder with its head turned tot face the left side of the coin on Morgan's reverse. In its talons, it clutches arrows, symbols of military preparedness, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace. The bird stretches its wings toward the rim. Between them is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Just inside the rim inscriptions is an open wreath. Those rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."

Choice Uncirculated MS63

The team at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) determined that this coin is in choice uncirculated condition. That is why they assigned it a grade of Mint State 63. It features some nice toning.
