Why purchase this Morgan 1889 Toned Silver Dollar?
This 1889 Morgan has some attractive toning that is sure to make it a prized possession for any collector. In spite of the high mintage of this coin - over 21.7 million pieces - this coin's MS63 grade is high for the series. Struck from .7734 troy oz. of constitutional silver at the Philadelphia Mint, the piece shown on this page is the exact one that you will receive.
Historic Liberty Design by George Morgan
The Morgan Dollar will always enjoy a special place in the hearts of Americans, and not just coin collectors, in no small part thanks to the decision of George T. Morgan to choose Anna Willess Williams as his model for Liberty. Williams was an American style model, a sharp contrast to the Greek style models who had been used before. She is depicted in left-side profile wearing a Phrygian cap, which partially covers her curly hair. Also on her head is a crown made from two staple American crops, cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, which is primarily a Northern one. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars, one for each of the original states, and two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1889."
Morgan's reverse design consists of an open wreath around an eagle. The eagle stretches its wings upward and outward in a "V" formation. Between them is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The bird holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The olive branch represents a preference for peace, while the arrows remind all that America is willing to defend her values. Rim inscriptions offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) gave this coin a Mint State 63 grade. To receive that grade, a coin must have a good strike, full mint luster, and show no traces of wear. This coin displays pleasant toning.
