Why purchase this Toned 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar?
Every serious Morgan collector needs at least one 1889 Dollar, as it was the highest mintage in the series. Even so, pieces in high mint state can be very difficult to find. Accordingly, this toned MS63 piece is a great choice for collectors who are looking for a beautiful piece from the issue but don't have unlimited funds for their favorite hobby. The coin was struck on a .7734 troy oz. planchet of constitutional, or .900 fine, silver at the Philadelphia Mint.
Innovative Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan designed both faces of this silver dollar. His obverse design made history by breaking from the tradition of using Greek-style models and instead choosing an American-style one, Anna Willess Williams, for Liberty. He depicts the allegorical figure in left-side profile wearing a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom. She also wears a crown made from two staple American crops, one primarily Northern, wheat, and the other Southern, cotton. The date, "1889," is inscribed along the rim at the bottom, while "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) arches over Liberty. They are connected by thirteen stars, symbols of the original states.
On the reverse, a wreath wraps around an eagle, which holds arrows and an olive branch. Familiar themes in American coinage, the arrows represent America's willingness to defend her values and the olive branch a preference for peace. The eagle spreads its wings upwards, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between them. The other inscriptions on this face, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR," encircle the image along the rim.
This coin received a Mint State 63 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it has a good strike, full mint luster, and lacks any signs of wear.
