Why add this Toned 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection?
With a mintage of over 21.7 million pieces, the 1889 Morgan must be a part of any collection of the iconic coins. This MS63 piece is a great choice for discerning collectors given the difficulty of finding this coin in high mint state. It was struck on a .7734 troy oz. planchet of constitutional silver, which is .900 fine. When you order, you will receive the exact coin shown here.
Historic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan, from whom the coin gets its named, designed both faces of this silver dollar. One reason that the coin enjoys such an important place in the American psyche is that Morgan chose Anna Willess Williams, an American style model, for Liberty rather than a Greek style model, as was customary at the time. Fittingly for a coin that was first issued shortly after the Civil War, she dons a Phrygian cap, a symbol of a freed slave, and a crown of cotton and wheat, a Southern crop and a Northern one. Her left-side effigy is encircled by two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and the date, "1889," as well as thirteen stars.
On the reverse, an eagle's body is oriented toward the holder. Its head is turned to the left side of the coin, and its wings are stretched upward toward the rim. In its talons it clutches arrows, symbols of the country's readiness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which indicates a preference for peace. An open wreath partially encircles it. Rim inscriptions offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and its face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
Beautifully Preserved MS63
This coin received a Mint State 63 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it has about a good strike, appealing mint luster, and lacks any traces of wear. It displays lovely toning.
