Why purchase this 1889 Toned Morgan Silver Dollar?

This MS63 1889 Morgan, which has some toning, is a fantastic choice for discerning collectors. The coin was part of the largest issue in the entire Morgan series, but not many coins in this edition received grades above MS65. That makes this piece among the most beautiful choices among coins that are affordable for most collectors. It was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a .7734 troy oz. planchet of .900 fine silver, which is often called "constitutional silver."

Groundbreaking Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

Both faces of this coin were designed by George T. Morgan. On the obverse is his historic portrait of Liberty, which is significant in large part due to his selection of Anna Willess Williams as his model. Up to that point, the tradition was to model Liberty after a Greek-style figure. Williams was an American-style one. Morgan shows her in left-side profile wearing a Phrygian cap and a crown. The cap represents her freedom, while the crown is made of two staple American crops, one primarily Northern, wheat, and the other Southern, cotton. The date, "1889," is inscribed below the portrait, and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) is inscribed above it. Thirteen stars are also included on the rim.

On the reverse, an eagle stretches its wings upwards. In its talons it holds arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which indicates a preference for peace. A wreath partially encircles the image, going from just under one wing to just under the other. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the bird's wings. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rimm.

Well Preserved MS63
