Why add this Morgan Silver 1889 Toned Dollar to your collection?
Morgan Silver Dollars are among the few coins that can truly be considered part of the American psyche. To this day, they are passed down from one generation to the next, even among those who are not avid coin collectors. This 1889 piece comes from the highest mintage in the entire series, though its MS63 grade is relatively high given the scarcity of the issue in high Mint State grades. Struck on a .7734 troy oz planchet of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, the coin has some attractive toning that makes it unique. Historic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
George T. Morgan's obverse design is a major reason that this coin is the most beloved in American history. He chose Anna Willess Williams, an American style model, for Liberty rather than following the tradition of using Greek style models for the figure. She dons a crown of cotton and wheat, one Southern crop and one Northern one, and a Phrygian cap that covers much of her long, curly hair. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars and two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1889."
An eagle spreads its wings on the reverse, which was also designed by Morgan. The bird holds arrows, symbols of military readiness, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in its claws. Between its wings is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." An open wreath arches under the bird. The coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
Beautifully Preserved MS63
This coin was awarded a grade of Mint State 63 by the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). Coins given that grade show no signs of wear and have full mint luster and an excellent strike.
