Why order this Silver 1889 Toned Morgan Dollar?

No collection of America's most iconic series is complete without an 1889 piece. this issue had the highest run in the entire series, yet examples in high mint state are elusive. That puts this MS63 piece among the most attractive yet affordable options for most collectors. The coin was struck on a .7734 troy oz. planchet of .9000 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint.

Novel Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

George T. Morgan, who designed both faces of this coin, lends his name to it. On the obverse, he depicts Liberty in an American style, a marked changed from previous Greek style depictions of the figure on American coinage. On her head are a Phrygian cap, which designates her a freed slave, and a crown made from one Northern crop, wheat, and one Southern one, cotton. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars and two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1899."

On the reverse, a wreath mostly encircles an eagle. The eagle spreads its wings upward toward the edge while holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Above its head, which faces the left side of the coin, is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." Two more inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR," encircle the image along the rim.

Uncirculated MS63

The experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded this coin an uncirculated grade of Mint State 63. That means that it lacks any traces of wear and has excellent strike and surface characteristics, in addition to some lovely toning.
