Why purchase this Toned Morgan 1889 Silver Dollar?
At least one 1889 Morgan Dollar should be in every American's collection. This issue was the highest mintage of any in the entire series at over 21.7 million pieces. In spite of that high mintage, this coin's grade is relatively high for the issue, making it a great option for collectors whose budgets are not unlimited. It was struck from .7734 troy oz. of constitutional silver at the Philadelphia Mint. The coin that you will receive is the exact one shown on this page.
Groundbreaking Liberty Design by George Morgan
George T. Morgan designed both faces of this coin. His Liberty design for the obverse broke new ground with his selection of an American-style model, Anna Willess Williams, for Liberty. Prior to this series, Greek-style models for the figure were the norm. Depicted in left-side profile, she wears a crown that represents national unity, which was significant for a coin first issued shortly after the end of the Civil War. It consists of cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. She also dons a traditional symbol of freedom, a Phrygian cap, which covers some of her long, curly hair. Thirteen stars and two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1889," encircle the image.
The reverse has a pair of rim inscriptions that offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR." The former is broken up by the outstretched wings of an eagle, which holds arrows and an olive branch. They symbolize American's willingness to fight for her values and a preference for peace, respectively. "IN GOD WE TRUST," the national motto, is inscribed above the bird's head.
