Why add this this 1889 Toned Silver Morgan Dollar to your collection?
Few coins are 'must haves' for any American collection, and the 1889 Morgan may be at the top of that short list. That is because it had the highest run in the entire series with 21.7 million pieces struck at the Philadelphia Mint that year. This coin stands out among them on account of its attractive toning. Novel Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Both faces of this coin feature the designs of the man for whom it is named, George T. Morgan. His obverse design made history thanks to his choice of Anna Willess Williams, an American style model, for Liberty rather than a Greek style model, as was the tradition at the time. She has long, curly hair that is partially covered by a Phrygian cap, which denotes a freed slave. Also on her head is a crown made of cotton and wheat, two staple American crops. Given that the coin was first issued shortly after the Civil War, this is an important symbol of unity, as it is one Southern crop and one Northern one. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars and two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1889."
An eagle is oriented toward the holder with its head turned to the left side of the coin on the reverse. It spreads its wings as it clutches arrows and an olive branch, symbols of military readiness and peace, respectively. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head, and an open wreath partially frames it. The country and face value of the coin are inscribed along the rim, reading, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
Well Preserved MS63
Relatively few examples of this coin have received high mint state grades, so this Mint State 63 coin is a fantastic choice for budget conscious collectors. When Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) gives a coin that grade, it means that the piece shows no signs of wear, has a good strike, and excellent mint luster. It displays subtle and attractive toning.
