Why add this Silver 1889 Toned Morgan Dollar to your collection?
No collection of American coins is complete without at least one piece from the highest mintage of the country's most iconic series. 21.7 million Morgans were struck on .7734 troy oz planchets at the Philadelphia Mint in 1889. This one is unique among them, though, thanks to its attractive toning. The coin that you see on this page is the one that you will receive.
Exquisite Liberty Design by George Morgan
This coin is named for the man who designed both of its faces, George T. Morgan. Morgan made history by selecting an American style model, Anna Willess Williams, for Liberty rather than following the tradition of using a Greek style model for the figure. He renders her in left-side profile wearing a Phrygian cap, which indicates that someone is a freed slave, and a crown of cotton and wheat. Morgans were first issued shortly after the Civil War, and the crown is a symbol of unity, consisting of one Southern crop and one Northern one. Thirteen stars join two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1889," in encircling the image.
An eagle holds arrows and an olive branch on the reverse. The arrows represent America's willingness to protect her values, while the olive branch symbolizes a preference for peace. The bird is partially encircled by an open wreath, and its wings spread toward the rim creating a V-shape. Between those wings is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed on the rim.
Beautifully Preserved MS62
One of the numismatic world's most respected grading companies, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), certified that this coin is in Mint State 62 condition. A coin in that state must not show any signs of wear and will have mint luster fully present.
