Why buy this 1889 Silver Toned Morgan Dollar?
No collection of American coins is complete without at least one coin from the highest issue of the iconic Morgan series. Over 21.7 million Morgans were struck in Philadelphia on .7734 troy oz. planchets of .900 fine silver in 1889. This one has some attractive toning, which makes it totally unique. Patriotic Liberty Design by George Morgan
George T. Morgan, from whom the coin gets its name, designed both of its faces. His obverse features an American-style Liberty, whom he modeled off of Anna Willess Williams. This marked a departure from the long standing tradition of depicting the figure in the Greek style. She wears a crown of cotton and wheat, which symbolizes American unity with one Southern crop and one Northern one, and a Phrygian cap that covers much of her long, curly hair. Her effigy is encircled by thirteen stars and two rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1889."
"UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" are inscribed along the rim of the reverse. They encircle an open wreath that partially encircles the national bird, an eagle. The bird's body is oriented toward the holder, but its head is turned to face the left side of the coin. In its talons are arrows, symbols of America's preparedness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which represents one of those values, peace. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the bird's wings, which stretch toward the rim.
Beautifully Maintained MS62
Very few 1889 Morgans can be found in high mint state, so this Mint State 62 piece is an attractive choice for the budget minded collector. The coin received that grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), and it means that the coin bears no traces of circulation wear and full mint luster. It features excellent toning
