Why order this Toned Silver 1889 Morgan Dollar?
Over 21.7 million 1889 Morgans were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, making it the highest mintage in the entire series. That means that every collection of American coins, Morgan or otherwise, should have at least one piece from this issue. Given the scarcity of this coin in high mint state, this MS62 piece is a fantastic option. All Morgans were struck from .7734 troy oz of .900 fine silver. When you order, you will receive the exact coin depicted on this page, which has some attractive toning.
Stunning Liberty Design by George Morgan
Both faces of the Morgan Dollar were designed by the man for whom it is named, George T. Morgan. His obverse design is historic in that he depicted Liberty as an American-style figure, rather than a Greek-style one, which was customary at the time. Shown in left-side profile, she has long, curly hair that covers the back of her neck. On her head are a Phrygian cap, a piece worn by freed slaves, and a crown made from cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. Thirteen stars join two inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1889," along the rim.
A laurel wreath opens just inside the rim inscriptions on the reverse. Inside the wreath is an eagle, which holds arrows, symbols of America's military preparedness, and an olive branch, which indicates a preference that the military not be needed. The bird stretches its wings toward the rim in a V-shape, within which is an inscription of the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
Stunning Uncirculated MS62
According to the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), this coin is in Mint State 62 condition. To receive that grade, a coin must not have any traces of wear and display full mint luster. There is also some lovely toning evident.
