Why buy this 1889 Morgan Toned Silver Dollar?
Every collector of classic American coins has to have at least one 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar. Although this issue had the most pieces struck in the entire series at over 21.7 million, there are very few pieces that have received high mint state grades. That makes this piece particularly attractive. This piece was struck on a .7734 troy oz. planchet of constitutional silver at the Philadelphia Mint. Exquisite Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Both the obverse and the reverse were designed by George T. Morgan. On the obverse is his historic Liberty image, which he modeled using Anna Willess Williams as his model. Morgan's choice of Willess, an American style model, broke from the tradition of depicting Liberty in a Greek style. She has long, curly hair that is partially covered by a Phrygian cap, which indicates that she is free. She also wears a crown made from cotton and wheat, one Southern crop and one Northern one. Rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and the date, "1889," combine with thirteen stars to encircle the portrait.
The reverse bears an eagle, the national bird. Its wings spread upward and it holds arrows, symbols of military readiness, and an olive branch, a symbol of peace, in its talons. A wreath wraps under it, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
Beautifully Maintained MS62
This coin shows no indications of wear. That is why Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) awarded it the uncirculated grade Mint State 62.
