Why buy this Toned 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar?

Although over 21.7 million 1889 Morgans were struck, pieces in high Mint State condition can be extremely difficult to find. For collectors who don't have unlimited budgets, that makes this MS62 piece an extremely attraction option. The coin is a product of the Philadelphia mint, where it was struck on a .7734 troy oz. planchet of .900 fine silver.

Iconic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

On the obverse is George T. Morgan's famous Liberty design. Its place in American numismatic history stems from the fact that Morgan used Anna Willess Williams, an American-style figure, rather than a Greek-style figure, as had been tradition. On her head are a Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom, and a crown of cotton and wheat. Notably for a coin first issued shortly after the Civil War, cotton is a Southern crop and wheat is primarily a Northern one. The date, "1889," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) join thirteen stars on the rim.

The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the upstreteched wings of an eagle on the reverse. That eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, symbols of military readiness and a peace, in its talons. A wreath wraps under the bird. The image is encircled by a pair of rim inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."

Uncirculated MS62

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) graded this coin Mint State 62. That means that the coin lacks any sign of circulation wear.
