Why order this Morgan 1889 Toned Silver Dollar?
The Morgan Dollar that you will receive when you place your order is the exact one shown on this page. It was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a .7734 troy oz planchet of constitutional silver. The coin bears some attractive toning. Its MS62 grade is relatively high for a coin of this type in spite of the fact that this was the highest mintage issue of any coin in the series.
Classic Liberty Design by George Morgan
Coin designer George T. Morgan transformed American numismatics when he broke with the tradition of depicting Liberty as a Greek-style figure and instead chose an American-style figure, Anna Willess Williams, as his model for her. The allegorical figure has long, curly hair that is partially covered by a Phrygian cap, which denotes a freed slave. She also dons a crown made from cotton, a Southern crop, and wheat, a Northern one. "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) arches over her effigy, while the date, "1889," is below it. The two inscriptions are connected by thirteen stars.
At the top of the reverse design, the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the wings of an eagle. That eagle faces the left side of the coin while holding arrows, symbols of America's readiness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which indicates that the country prefers peace. Under the bird is an open wreath. These images are encircled by a pair of rim inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
