Why add this 1889 Toned Morgan Silver Dollar to your collection?
This 1889 Morgan would make a fantastic addition to any collection of American coins. It was part of the highest mintage of any coin in the series at over 21.7 million. Even so, high mint state examples are relatively rare. This coin, which was struck from .7734 troy oz. of .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint, has some attractive toning that is sure to appeal to many collectors. When you order, you will receive the exact piece shown here.
Breathtaking Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
One of the major reasons that this coin will forever have a place in the hearts of American collectors is that designer George T. Morgan departed from the long-standing tradition of using a Greek-style model for Liberty and instead opted for Anna Willess Williams, an American-style model. She is depicted in left-side profile wearing a Phrygian cap that covers much of her long, curly hair. She also dons a crown, which is made from two staple American crops, cotton and wheat. This is significant given the time period, i.e. shortly after the Civil War, in that cotton is a Southern crop and wheat is primarily a Northern one. A pair of rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1889," combine with thirteen stars to encircle the design.
The reverse features the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," inscribed between the upstretched wings of an eagle. In the bird's talons are arrows, which represent American willingness to defend the nation's value, and an olive branch, which indicates a preference for peace. A wreath runs from just under one wing to just under the other inside the rim inscriptions. Those inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
Exquisite Uncirculated MS62
The relative scarcity of 1889 Morgans in high mint state make this Mint State 62 piece a particularly attractive option. That grade, which was given to it by the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), means that the coin shows no signs of wear. It also features some nice toning.
