Why purchase this Silver 1889 Morgan Dollar?

Every serious American coin collector should own a 1889 Silver Morgan Dollar, as it had the highest mintage in the entire series. Even so, prices rise sharply above this grade, which makes this coin an attractive option for collectors who like well-preserved coins but prefer to avoid hefty premiums. It was struck from .900 fine silver at the Philadelphia Mint and has an actual silver weight of .7734 troy oz. It was one of 21,726,000 pieces in its mintage.

Pioneering Liberty Design by George T. Morgan

George T. Morgan's obverse broke from numismatic tradition by choosing Anna Willess Williams, an American figure, as his model for Liberty rather than a Greek model. He shows her wearing a ribbon on which there is an inscription of her name, "LIBERTY," as well as a crown of cotton and wheat and a Phrygian cap, which is a symbol of her freedom.

The reverse features a familiar theme that goes back to the Great Seal of the United States. An eagle holds arrows and an olive branch, which symbolize military readiness and a preference for peace, respectively. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the up-stretched wings.

Uncirculated Mint State 64

According to the experts at the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), this coin has an average or better strike. It also has some hairlines or marks and other minuscule imperfections. That is why NGC graded it Mint State 64.
