Why order this Morgan 1889 Silver Dollar?
Even though the 1889 Morgan Dollar was the highest mintage in the entire run of the series, it is exceptionally difficult to find in GEM Brilliant Condition. That means that this piece, which was graded MS64, is a fantastic option for discerning hobbyists looking to start or grow a collection of these iconic coins. The coin was struck on a .7734 troy oz. planchet of .900 fine silver.
Groundbreaking Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Both faces of this coin bear the designs of the man for whom it is named, George T. Morgan. On the obverse is his highly acclaimed Liberty design. The design is famous in large part because Morgan broke from the long tradition of selecting a Greek-style model for Liberty in favor of an American-style one, Anna Willess Williams. He shows the figure in left-side profile wearing a Phrygian cap and two staple American crops, cotton and wheat. The cap symbolizes freedom, while the crops represent a united America, as one is grown primarily in the north and the other is grown in the south. The date, "1889," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) are joined by thirteen stars on the rim.
An eagle spread sits wings upwards toward the rim on the reverse. In its talons it clutches arrows, symbols of America's willingness to defend her values, and an olive branch, which indicates a preference for peace. A wreath wraps under the bird, while the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed above its head. Rim inscriptions offer the coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR."
