Why purchase this 1889 Silver Morgan Dollar?
Although the Morgan 1889 Silver Dollar was the highest mintage in the series, examples of it in Brilliant Uncirculated condition are hard to find. That makes this coin, which is in Mint State 64 condition, an attractive option for collectors looking for a piece in great condition at an affordable price. The coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a .7734 troy oz. planchet of .900 fine silver.
Beloved Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
This coin is named for the man who designed both faces of it, George T. Morgan. On the obverse is his historic Liberty design, for which he broke with the tradition of using a Greek-style model for Liberty and instead chose an American-style one, Anna Willess Williams. Depicted in left-side profile, she dons a Phrygian cap, a traditional symbol of freedom, and a crown made from two important American crops, cotton and wheat. Rim inscriptions read "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1889." They are joined by thirteen stars, one for each of the original states.
On the reverse, an eagle clutches arrows and an olive branch while stretching its wings upward. The arrows symbolize America's willingness to defend her values, while the olive branch indicates a preference for peace. A wreath wraps around the bird, and the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between its wings. Rim inscriptions read, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
Beautifully Preserved MS64
This coin earned a grade of Mint State 64 from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That grade means that it has no traces of wear and an above average strike. It displays some lovely toning.
