Why add this 1889 Silver Morgan Dollar to your collection?
The 1889 Silver Dollar is a must have for any collector of the series. This issue had the highest mintage of any in the series at 21,726,000 pieces. In spite of the high mintage, the coin can be difficult to find in MS66 state and above, which makes this MS64 piece a great choice. This coin was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from .7734 troy oz. of .900 fine silver.
Historic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
Designer George T. Morgan, for whom the coin is named, made history by breaking from the tradition of using a Greek-style model for Liberty and instead going with an American-style choice, Anna Willess Williams. He shows the figure in left-side profile wearing a Phrygian cap and a crown made from cotton and wheat. The crown symbolizes unity, as one of the crops, wheat, was grown primarily in the North, while cotton was primarily grown in the South. The figure is encircled by two rim inscriptions and thirteen stars, one for each of the original states. The inscriptions include the date, "1889," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one).
On the reverse, an eagle spreads its wings upward while holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. The former symbolize America's willingness to defend her values, while the later indicates a preference for peace. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the bird's wings. A wreath partially encircles the bird just inside the two rim inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR."
Beautifully Preserved MS64
This coin earned a Mint State 64 grade from the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that has an above average strike and not a single sign of wear. It also features some nice toning.
