Why purchase this Morgan 1889 Silver Dollar?
Although the 1889 Morgan from the Philadelphia Mint was the highest mintage in the entire series at over 21.5 million pieces, examples of it above MS65 condition are difficult to find. That is why discerning collectors are sure to appreciate this MS64 coin. Like other coins in the series, it was struck on a .7734 troy oz. planchet of .900 fine silver, which is sometimes referred to as "constitutional silver." Iconic Liberty Design by George T. Morgan
This series takes its name from the man who designed it, George T. Morgan. On the obverse is his historic Liberty design, which depicts the figure in an American style rather than a Greek one. Fittingly for a coin that was first issued a little over a decade after the Civil War, it features Liberty wearing a crown of cotton and wheat, one staple Southern crop and one staple Northern one. She also wears a Phrygian cap, a symbol of freedom. Thirteen stars, one for each of the original states, join the date, "1889," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) along the rim.
The reverse design features an eagle holding arrows and an olive branch. The olive branch indicates a preference for peace, while the arrows indicate that America is willing to defend her values when necessary. A wreath encircles the bird up to its upstretched wings. Between those wings is the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST." The coin's country, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," and face value, "ONE DOLLAR," are inscribed along the rim.
Exquisitely Preserved MS64
This coin was awarded a Mint State 64 grade by the experts at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that the coin has an above average strike, full mint luster, and lacks any signs of wear. It also displays lovely toning.
