Why purchase this Morgan 1888-S Silver Dollar?
The Morgan Silver Dollar is beloved among coin collectors and non-collectors alike. Designer George T. Morgan's decision to use an American-style model instead of a Greek-style one helped in a small way to forge a new, united identity for a nation that had been torn apart by a Civil War in the decade before the coin was first issued. This piece is an important part of the series' history, as it was part of the tenth-anniversary issue.
- This piece is $1 US legal tender.
- This coin was struck from 26.73 grams of .900 fine silver.
- This piece was struck at the San Francisco Mint, which is represented by its "S" mint mark.
- The coin comes from a mintage of 657,000 pieces.
- This piece comes from the tenth-anniversary issue of the Morgan Silver Dollar.
Featuring George. T. Morgan's Historic Walking Liberty Design
Obverse: Both faces of this coin bear the designs of George T. Morgan. On the obverse is a left-side portrait of Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap and a ribbon. The design was historic because of Morgan's choice of an American-style model, Anna Willess Williams, rather than a Greek-style model, as was tradition. Liberty is encircled by thirteen stars and the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "1888."
Reverse: On the reverse, an eagle spreads its wings while holding arrows and an olive branch within an open wreath. The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between its outstretched wings. Encircling the image along the rim are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR." George T. Morgan served as the US Mint's seventh Chief Engraver. This Silver Dollar is the piece for which he is most famous.
