Historic Liberty Design by George Morgan
This series takes its name from the man who designed both faces of the coin, George T. Morgan. Morgan made history with his Liberty design by opting for an American-style model, Anna Willess Williams, instead of a Greek-style one, as had been tradition. He renders her in left-side profile wearing a Phrygian cap, which represents her freedom, and a crown of cotton and wheat. These two crops were significant because the coin was first issued shortly after the Civil War. Cotton is a Southern crop, while wheat is primarily a Northern one. The portrait is encircled by rim inscriptions, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (From many, one) and "1884," and thirteen stars.
The national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," is inscribed between the upstretched wings of an eagle on the reverse. The bird, whose head is turned to the left side of the coin, holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The former serves as a reminder that America will fight for her values when necessary, while the later expresses a preference for peace. A wreath wraps under the bird, while rim inscriptions, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR," the bird and the wreath.
This coin was graded Mint State 62 by the team at Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). That means that it shows not a single sign of wear.
